Snowbound and Hungry in Alexandria Virginia.

Written by: Janet Pope

Stuck in a blizzard, in the middle of a Alexandria, Janet sees the culinary and historic delights of the town.

Our latest trip to Alexandria, Virginia began on a very positive note. I dreaded a long car ride from New York City, and I was pleasantly surprised that it took a smooth four and a half hours with the time flying by. In retrospect, I discovered that this was literally the calm before the storm.

We checked into our hotel, the Comfort Inn, and headed off to dinner at the Stardust, in the heart of Old Town Alexandria. Walking into the Stardust was like being transported to a time and place where creativity and a positive attitude ran rampant. This quaint little restaurant is filled with memorabilia from the 5O's. There are knickknacks everywhere, including many household appliances like coffee percolators, toasters, blenders and salt and peppers shakers that will bring you back to memories of your mother’s kitchen. The lighting is low and affords an atmosphere of intimacy in any cozy spot you eat in. We sat next to one of the two roaring fireplaces and felt instantly warm and comfortable.

The owner, Avery Kincaid greeted us and proudly told us about her 15-year-old establishment. She pointed out that Davy Jones, of the Monkees, sat in my very seat I now have a new claim to fame!

Don ordered the creamy cabbage soup, which was indeed creamy. Not being a fan of cabbage, I hadn't ordered it and was sorry. I am not a brave adventurous soul by nature. It was delicious.

I began the meal with vegetable spring rolls in a plum dipping sauce. The menu is very eclectic with an Asian influence.

Don tried a special of crab cakes which he finished off and declared "Amazing". I had the Angus Beef Flank steak in a rice wine sauce. The serving portion was so much that Don was forced by guilt to finish my dish. The flank steak was so tender it melted in your mouth.

I ended this wonderful meal with New York Cheesecake with fresh berries, and Don had the "chef made" coffee ice cream. Both were noticeably served on chilled plates. We were tempted to try one of there 25 various Startinis, a refreshing look at the 1950's popular Martini, but we opted for the coffee instead.

Well this was a great meal and a great first evening in Alexandria. We left the stars in the restaurant and ventured out into the calm star filled evening.

Remember this was the calm before the storm.
