Playa Mujeres - Part 1

Written by: Janet Pope

Janet and Don take a chance to relax, slow down and smell the ocean, as they experience the sights and tastes of Mexico.

Playa Mujeres "If your goal is a high quality destination with a luxurious unforgettable experience, then keep in touch with this project. The future of the truly exclusive vacation is rapidly approaching." Forget the pennies, save your dollars. What you don’t know, I will tell you. There is a vacation development under construction in Mexico, just 3 miles north of Cancun that will knock your silk socks off. What you don’t have silk socks!? Then get some!

On a little peninsula about 3 miles north of Cancun a little simple vacation spot of 930 acres called the "Playa Mujeres Resort" is under construction, that will out do Cancun as you know it. In short, this resort is anticipated to be top quality design with top quality materials and top quality workmanship, meant for top quality people. It seems that the international jet set crowd have been forced to dabble with the merely wealthy and are desirous of an exclusive spot where they can truly relax and be left to themselves. The answer is this: look to 2005 and come to the Playa Mujeres development. Playa Mujeres, a dream so special, that it took years to work out the finial design and even longer to assemble the right team for management of the financial, construction, environmental and historical concerns and to win approvals from the Federal and local governments along the way. In fact, after several major presentations this management team basks in a "re-commitment" ceremony in which they enter the sea fully clothed and toast to the success of their enterprise. Can you imagine it? Try that in New York on the Hudson River! That would really be a test of faith. Their belief in their purpose is staggering and based upon this commitment, it is apparent Playa Mujeres will be completed on time, on budget and deliver the exclusive amenities that Cancun promised but is falling short of.

Grand Opening
About five years ago a few dreamers were invited to create something out of nothing. An opportunity was given to them to transform what appeared to be mere overgrown jungle into a new vacation experience for a select clientele, who demand the very best. They met the challenge by assembling an international team to manage and develop this unique area, a prime piece of property nestled between the Caribbean Ocean on the east and the Chacmochuc Lagoon on the west. This area is lush with undisturbed tropical plants and filled with ancient history, laying in wait to be revealed.

This is to be a 2-phase development of over $1.5 billion in which almost $45,000,000 has already been spent on roads, infrastructure plans and permits.

A development so big that upon completion the basic numbers will be staggering:
  • An estimated 10,700 skilled jobs are to be created in its construction with almost 6,500 being retained for maintenance and future construction.
  • 250 boat slips for the international traveler in a private marina.
  • 930 acres will eventually house four hotels, two environmentally sensitive friendly golf courses with a third to be added later, horse stables and a high-end shopping center.
  • 50+ exclusive water front homes are to be built with plans for almost 1000 more nestled within the golf course.
  • Two security gates will stand as sentinels of privacy.
  • Four miles of white sand beaches for the exclusive use of Playa Mujeres guests.
  • A 1,200-year-old Mayan Temple found on the property to be studied, restored where possible, and open to guests for tours.

View into the Lagoon
Those are just the basics. The details are as impressive as the numbers. In speaking with the project director Ramon Abascol, he summed up that after the many preliminary studies, Playa Mujeres would be a certain success because it had all the key ingredients for a deluxe, exclusive resort. First he said, it is a destination easy to get to, with a major international airport nearby. Secondly, it is to be an exclusive site that is also easy to get to being only 3 miles north of Cancun. Thirdly, Playa Mujeres is focusing and highlighting the growing popularity of golf by having golf superstar Greg Norman design two ecologically friendly 18-hole courses. Fourth, the area has a natural beauty of Isla Mujeres' beaches, sand, flora and coral. Fifth, Playa Mujeres has the full interest and commitment of the landowner Hendricks Hankes and the developer, Horst Schultze, CEO of the Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company. Together, they have been described as men who are great dreamers and are resolutely focused on the project.
