Cancun - Part 2

Written by: Janet Pope
Photography by: Donald

Janet and Don take a chance to relax, slow down and smell the ocean, as they experience the sights and tastes of Mexico.

The Playa Mujeres project is well underway and there is a special excitement in the air and in the area. No expense has been spared thus far in keeping the area as natural as possible. As roads were put in, any plants or trees were carefully removed and replanted in a nursery for landscaping elsewhere on the property. Almost all materials being used for construction are Mexican in origin, with an abundance of marble in order to maintain authenticity in style. And as any Mayan ruins or artifacts are unearthed they too have been worked around and preserved.

The team working on the formation of Playa Mujeres is interested in returning to the area the full experience of what Cancun was originally meant to be: a top notch, five star exclusive resort area.

The locational advantage is obvious but to enhance the exclusive nature of the development a helipad is available for those who can't wait to arrive with panache. Also, there are those two security gates. The first gate allows shoppers wishing to purchase the finest in world style. Negotiations are being pursued with international shops that can meet the demands and tastes of the international market. The second gate assures total privacy for the residents and vacationers.

A Greg Norman golf courses is meant to be much more than just a golf experience. Since 1987, the Greg Norman Golf Course Design Company plans golf courses with a deep appreciation of the unique ecology of an area. The fact is that until recently a golf course was designed on paper forcing the land to fit the plan. In this case, Greg Norman personally walked the site, consulted with geologists and designers and developed a plan whereby the first two golf courses can be played independently or various holes can be consolidated into a 3rd almost "user designed course", all in harmony with the land. The water holes, hills, jungles, ruff, sand traps, greens and the other elements of the courses are planned to utilize a re-arrangement of the native trees and plants. This is why the nursery and trained gardeners are so important.

While at the reception for the opening of this phase of Playa Mujeres construction, Greg Norman was handed a hiking stick as he walked to the make shift green to hit a ball off the symbolic "first tee". He held the stick in his large hands took a few steps, held it up for the crowd to see, put it aside and then picked up a club to hit the ball. I inquired about this little ceremony and was informed that when Greg first came to this area with the planning team to walk the site, he pick up this very stick. It apparently felt so comfortable to him that he hiked with it throughout the rest of the inspection. He used it to indicate what trees would stay and which would be re-planted and where. This stick steadied his walk, pushed the brush aside and was utilized to outline the course in the sand. When I asked why he kept this stick, I was told because it felt right. And perhaps that sums up Playa Mujeres: it feels right. The first course is scheduled to open in 2005, the second will follow in Phase II. Consolidate all that with the funds already spent on the infrastructure, then one can understand the high degree of commitment to success this development is attracting.
