Mount Washington - Part 3
Written by: Stacey Stern
To take your family on a rustic adventure reminiscent of your own childhood memories, New Hampshire has all the best pieces to make a new trip down Memory Lane.
We went over to the park again for a while, and then into the pool at the hotel for a quick dip, before giving the kids a shower and going to bed.
Tuesday, we went over to the inn for breakfast. My decaf was ready and waiting. Breakfast included an egg and sausage soufflé, pancakes, banana bread, fruit with sour cream available, cereal, juice, and coffee. After a hearty meal, Dick offered to show us the inn. There are two dining rooms and sitting area on the main floor. Each of the rooms on the three floors is charmingly decorated with private baths.
The kids enjoyed the swing on the porch, while we checked out of the inn and set our sights on Story Land, Route 16 in Glen. We entered the park and headed straight for the bathroom, which we were surprised to see had a men's, a women's, and a family room. We opted for the family room, which was large enough for me to bring in the stroller and Amanda, while I changed D.J.. We said hello to Mother Goose as we walked past Humpty Dumpty, climbed in Grandfather Tree, toured the house of the Three Bears, and saw the Wolf in bed talking to Little Red Riding Hood at Granny's house. Each place told the story as we looked around. D.J. fell asleep, so we passed the Little Dreamer play area, but all the little ones were having a lot of fun. Amanda and I went on Alice's Tea Cups, and then we walked through the Storybook Animals past the Guard House to Cinderella's Pumpkin Coach. We rode to the castle to meet Cinderella and see her glass slipper. I stopped in the water mister tent to cool off, and was followed by Amanda and then D.J. Then we all went on the Carousel together. The Buccaneer Pirate Ship has a play area where you can shoot the boat with water cannons. D.J. did not want to leave that spot, but so I had to pick him up kicking and screaming.
The Let's Pretend Imagination Shop has an area with a mirror and a tree of hats for playing with. We were zebras, clowns, birthday cakes, and cowboys, while D.J. rode various hobby horses with different animal heads. This was another place he left kicking and screaming. We walked over to the shooting gallery which instead of guns, had loaded cameras. Amanda had fun shooting the objects and watching them move. D.J. was bored, so he and I walked around. Next we went into the Silver Mine, and then Amanda and I rode the Polar Coaster, while Sal and D.J. watched from the viewing area. We walked over to another mister tent and then to the Slipshod Safari Tour. The front car was a lion's cage, which Amanda insisted on sitting in. D.J. thought it was hilarious, as we drove passed the silly animals. After another quick misting, we took the train to the front of the park to meet Jim Miller for lunch.
As we walked over to the Friends Around the World Food Fair, Jim pointed out the new Cuckoo Clock ride that was designed by the owner and is running, but the full decorations are not yet complete. This is the only ride of its kind through the inside of a cuckoo clock. For lunch, I ordered a cheeseburger with fries, Sal had a salad with grilled chicken, Amanda had a ham and cheese wrap, and D.J. had a slice of pizza. I was surprised at how reasonable the cost of the food was, and Jim explained they try to keep the costs down since people come with large families. Even the admission is reasonable at $19.00 for the day, $16.00 for seniors, and children ages 0-3 free. We discussed how nice the park is for families, since it caters to preteens, all the children are supervised and the park is very clean.
