Mykonos - Part 4

Written by: Dominick A. Miserandino

The most completely white city in the world. Painted white, buildings are colored white. It's completely absent of any colors.

Mykonos is a very exciting place and one of the top islands to visit, of all of the Greek Islands. For me, it was a boring day in Mykonos. I’m sure that Mykonos is an exciting place to some, but we were already tired from singing karaoke and singing at Don Vito's and that completely threw our schedule off.

Well, we headed upstairs for the Greek buffet on deck. We looked out at Mykonos from the distance and the debate became whether it was even worth it now that we were already late.

Basically, our day involved finding an internet café. We wandered into Mykonos and I said, I wanted to check my email. A simple request.

"Oh, go down this street, make a left at that street and then go up there."

No problem.

"Oh, this internet café is closed. Go left, then right, spin around once and jump up and down."

No problem.

"Oh, this one is closed too. Go to the windmills. Climb the mountain. Get your wife some water because it is really hot. Climb the mountain some more and ask there."

After three hours of hiking, we found the internet café, checked the mail and started heading back.

Why did we get lost so much?

Mykonos is the whitest island in the world. It’s ridiculously white. If Mykonos was overcast with white, puffy clouds, the entire population would be confused on which way is up. They paint the buildings white. The sand is white. The streets are white. The signs are white. Everything is white, but to break it up they use sea blue. So you’ll see a roof that looks identical to the sea, which is just in the background.

So now you understand why, when you look into the town of Mykonos, all you see is white things. White blotches mixed together with other white blotches.

Some people find it beautiful, but I found it a bit distracting. Then again, that might just have been the frustration of wandering around aimlessly for three hours... in the heat... getting lost in the white buildings.
