Red Mountain Spa - Part 4
Written by: Donald Miserandino
Evening Yoga was another new experience. There were about thirty people in an exercise room, sitting on floor mats listening to the instructor give directions. It sounded something like, "Stretch out your hand to the front and your leg to the back, while standing on one foot, then touch a space on the ground about twelve inches in front of your toes, without bending your knees." I did the best I could, without becoming a train wreck or looking like a large pink flamingo. The most relaxing part was when we sat on the mat and imagined quiet spots.
The best was a discussion after the class on personal goals, and the inner space needed to claim ownership of them. “This is the place,” I thought. "Safe and secure, try new things, and go home a new person." That’s when I decided it was all right to go for the Homme Facial for men.
Listen close. I have never, ever had thoughts of having a facial before now. I don’t let anybody near this classic face. Even my wife must proceed with caution. But it seems that the travel editor wanted me to push the envelope on my personal experiences. Until I got into that room, I thought the pedicure was intimate, the yoga was to inner places I had never been, and the Chi Ball had me doing things I wouldn’t tell my mother about, but the facial was total trust. There I was, lying down on a table, shirtless, face up, with my head almost over the edge, underneath a huge magnifying glass having someone examine every pore, and zit, and hair- pulling, prodding, and popping. All the time asking me about the wife, kids, life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. At the end, I looked in a mirror and didn’t notice a big difference. That’s when she said, “Listen to what everyone else says when they look at you.” And she was absolutely right! At dinner that night the comments abounded. “You look younger." "You look great!"
“Red Mountain … Where the spirit of the mountain and the expertise of our staff educate, challenge, motivate and empower our guests in their pursuit of enhanced health” It was definitely a growth experience, and I felt educated, challenged, motivated and empowered indeed.
