Cruising the Fjords - Part 10

Written by: Dominick A. Miserandino

I think I’ve seen the fjords. This part of the cruise and Norway is not geared towards type-A personalities. I want to do something. I don’t know what, but something. Fortunately, I bided my time by getting a massage. Unfortunately, she confused me with hot rocks.

I’m an insecure man and the entire idea of a massage, while it will alleviate my excessive back pain, brings up issues of intimacy. Now this massage therapist, wanted to come over with hot lava rocks and rub them into my body. My first imagery was of the Apostles getting stoned and martyred for their sins. I tried to explain this to her, but she assured me it was a common procedure.

The end result is that, of course, it felt nice and fixed my back, but the interesting part was that hidden on this ship, between the gym and the elevator you walked into this spa that felt like another world. I went to the steam room, cleaned myself up a bit, had my massage, and then entered the real world once more. I didn’t think they were allowed to have hot stones and flaming things on a ship, but I forgot about such issues as they played the standard relaxing, world music.

For dinner, I had an artichoke. Yes, it seems simple doesn’t it. A common vegetable, an artichoke. The story stretches back to the day before where Gabrielle, the maitre’d explained that they’ll make anything you like on the ship, with enough notice. I said, "But they seem to make only fancy French food, would they make a simple stuffed artichoke?"

It was a ploy. Of course they would, but by posing it as a challenge, he took it as such and rose to meet the challenge.

The next day we each had a stuffed artichoke. An artichoke that put my Sicilian mother-in-law to a challenge, and left her requesting pictures of the artichoke to prove that she could duplicate it.

After dinner it was time for the puppet show. Yes, a puppet show. On

board, the entertainment director, Ray Solaire is famous for making his own puppets and even performed at London’s Palladium. No, it wasn’t the sit on the lap and tell jokes type of show, but more of the watch the ostrich lip-sync a song about love. As a side note, rich people seem to love these types of jokes.
