Homecoming on a Silversea cruise ship in the middle of nowhere.

Seeing the ship had a feeling of coming home. Okay, so we didn’t know the crew yet, but it was that homecoming feeling, that we truly appreciated. The Silver Wind is five-star all the way. Sure you feel a bit guilty for living it up after leaving certain parts of a third world country, but you’ll get over that quickly.

Every cruise starts with the obligatory fire drill. People all stand around looking rather foolish with their life jackets on which has an additional side effect of being a social icebreaker. Margherita made some friends while I got distracted by salmon nachos. I didn’t expect the two to work, but was quite happy by the mix of lo-brow and highbrow.

This was when I discovered the real reason I enjoy the comfort of Silversea. Tonight we already broke the rules. Instead of having the first dinner in the main dining room, we ate at the Terrace Cafe because they were serving a Mexican dinner. The Terrace Café had a different ethnic gourmet menu every night. Margherita felt it was a bit of a sin to break the rules but I assured her that all would be fine. Nobody frowned on us.

Here’s the best part though. It seems that my wife takes a good deal of time to get ready. She claims that all women are like this, and that the process is entirely necessary.

"Is it really necessary to spend almost two hours getting ready to eat? Dinner won’t take that long."

"I really enjoy getting dressed up."

That was the key. This was how I would make this cruise work for me. She seemed to enjoy the process of getting ready. I, on the other hand, found the primping and pampering way too time consuming.

I left the room in such a way that nobody was offended.

I said hello to the staff; they said hello to me. I walked around the decks and waved to the passengers. They waved back. I went online and handled some work. Margherita didn’t even realize I was gone. This went on for almost and hour, I went back and changed for dinner. She had her time to get ready, and do whatever the hell she likes to do, and I got to do my own thing. Ahhh, the beauty of a cruise.
