Villa Roma - Part 2
Family run resort in the catskils

Written by: Janet Pope

A family run resort in the catskills that still has that family run intimacy even after decades of growth.

During our three days at Villa Roma, we enjoyed the outdoor pool as we relaxed on a lounge listening to a live band. We also took advantage of the indoor pool and the Jacuzzi. Don and I tried our hand at bowling for an additional fee. I scored a respectable 135, and Don was unwilling to have his score printed.

One day, we were lucky enough to win a whopping $4 at bingo, and a package of Oreo cookies. Don was quick to grab the cookies.

Prizes are also given out for various competitions all week. There is shuffleboard and a bocce contest, and guests have collected trophies through years past.

Through great skill and determination, Don and I proved to be champs at pitching pennies, and we won beaded necklaces -- the sign of a winner at Villa Roma. Everybody wears these necklaces when they win something there.

Our meals at Villa Roma were delicious with plenty of entrees to choose from. Both breakfast and dinner are included in the hotel price during the summer. At other times of the year, three full meals are included. In the summer months, the guests are kept too busy to want to stop for a set mealtime, but there are plenty of places to grab a quick bite.

At night, we opted to eat at "The Club" at Villa Roma golf course. Two nights a week, they feature a buffet, and besides the food being delicious, the view of the valley was breathtaking. It was also very peaceful and calm, which was a nice break from the main dining room, noisy with dishes, conversation and music.

Each night, Don and I took in the music and a show at the nightclub. I especially loved to watch the over-60 set dance to the old ballroom favorites. The comedians and singers featured were first rate. We laughed out loud with the comedy and clapped along with the music -- a sure sign of good entertainment!

We had a wonderful time at Villa Roma. We said goodbye to Debbie, and when we checked out, I told her how much I look forward to returning and bringing our family. Debbie was sorry we couldn't stay one more night since the employees were putting on a show that evening. That's when I realized what had been missing. I was hoping to see Patrick Swayze jump on the stage with the rest of the waiters and do some "Dirty Dancing." Oh well, next time.
