Essex County - Part 1
Where Eagles Soar

Written by: Janet Pope

Besides getting used to staying in a bed and breakfast our writers go on a three hour tour to see bald eagles in Connecticut.

All right so now I get it. Now I get what all the fuss is about. As my friends used to gush over their wonderful weekends in Bed & Breakfasts, I was clueless. I hesitate to admit this, but my husband and I had never been to a B&B before. Frankly, I didn't get the attraction in staying in someone's house. I opted for all of the amenities of a big hotel. Well now I can finally say, "I get IT". I certainly can't testify for all B&Bs, but the one we recently stayed in, The Riverwind Inn, in Deep River Connecticut was simply lovely.

We arrived there on a Friday evening after a 2 1/2-hour drive in rush hour traffic. As we pulled up to this beautiful country home with lights shining out from each window, we were just grateful to be at our destination.

I knocked on the door before I noticed an attached envelope with our names on it. Inside was a welcome note. Well right then I realized, "We're not in Brooklyn anymore!"- No offense to Brooklyn. I lived there for 45 happy years and I still consider it home. But let's face it; I wouldn't put a welcome note on the front door! Anyway we entered into a beautifully decorated old country inn still alive with the scent of a dwindling fire in the fieldstone fireplace. I felt a little like Snow White entering the enchanting home of the Seven Dwarfs. Every nook and rafter was filled with antiques and treasures waiting to be explored but no innkeepers were in sight.

There on the dining room table was a plate of homemade chocolate chip cookies and yet another note. Now I was beginning to feel like I was on a segment of Mission Impossible, following clues that might at any minute self-destruct. This note actually gave us directions to our guest room and informed us that breakfast would be served between 9 and 10 in the morning. Our room was aptly named, the "Hearts and Flowers" room and was decorated in a hearts and flowers motif, complete with heart stained glass windows and a floral comforter. We also found a tray of mints, two bottles of water, plush robes in the bathroom, journals to read with past guest comments, and a brochure telling us the history of the Inn. The whole setting was warm, cozy and totally inviting.

We collapsed and looked forward to a night of reading and relaxing.
