American Idol is a reality television singing competition show that is going on its 12th season. The show has had major success since its first season, having been the only program to be number one in ratings for seven consecutive seasons. The concept of the show is to find young new artists who want to start off their singing career. After several audition rounds where the judges choose who gets to stay another week, the viewers are then able to vote for their favorite. The show has produced many successful artists, including Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Chris Daughtry, Jennifer Hudson, Scotty McCreery and most recently Phillip Phillips.
The show's three original judges were Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson. Cowell and Abdul subsequently left, and the show has seen stars such as Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez judge the show. While Jackson has stayed on the show as a judge, Season 12 introduced Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj and Keith Urban as their new judges.
Season 12 of Idol currently airs on Fox on Wednesday and Thursday nights.
