Doctor Who

Season 1 of Doctor Who first aired on BBC in March of 2005. The show is a continuation of the original classic Doctor Who series which aired on BBC from November 23, 1963 until December 6, 1989 with 26 seasons. There was also a Doctor Who movie in 1996 which featured the Eighth Doctor. The seasons of the revived show are sometimes called series since there are 26 seasons of the original show.

The family friendly show focuses on the Doctor, an alien. He is a Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey. The Doctor often defends Earth from alien invaders including Daleks, the Silence, Cybermen and a Time Lord called the Master.

He is able to regenerate when he is about to die, which means he can change his appearance. It also means that various actors are able to play the part of the Doctor. There have been 11 Doctors so far, with Matt Smith playing the current Eleventh Doctor.

Russell T. Davies revived the show with the Ninth Doctor, played by Christopher Eccleston and his companion Rose Tyler, played by Billie Piper for season one. David Tennant joined the series as the Tenth Doctor in season two with Piper still portraying Rose Tyler. Piper left the show at the end of season two but returned for various episodes.

A new companion, Martha Jones played by Freema Agyeman, joined in season three. She was replaced by Catherine Tate’s character Donna Noble in season four.

The current doctor, Matt Smith, replaced Tennant and joined the show as the Eleventh Doctor in season five. A new companion was introduced, Amy Pond, portrayed by Karen Gillan. Her significant other, Rory Williams (played by Arthur Darvill), soon became a companion. Gillan and Darvill stayed on the show as companions until Season seven, episode five.

The new companion will be introduced in the Season seven Christmas special. She is reported to be called Clara and is played by Jenna-Louise Coleman.

The Doctor also has other friends who join him on adventures like Captain Jack Harkness (played by John Barrowman) and River Song (played by Alex Kingston), but they are not the main companions.

Various guest stars have appeared on the program including: Kylie Minogue, Colin Morgan, Mark Sheppard, Derek Jacobi, Carey Mulligan, Andrew Garfield, James Corden and Toby Jones.

The show also spawned two major spin-offs since its continuation: Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures. Barrowman’s Captain Jack Harkness is the main character in Torchwood and the show is aimed at adults rather than families.

The Sarah Jane Adventures is a children’s show that focuses on Sarah Jane Smith, played by Elisabeth Sladen. Smith was one of the Doctor’s companions from classic Doctor Who. She helped save the world from aliens with her son, his friends, K-9 the robot dog, and her supercomputer Mr. Smith. Sladen passed away in 2011.

Doctor Who has been growing in popularity and was the best selling show on iTunes in 2011.
