'Vampire Diaries' co-stars and former real life couple Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev joke about break-up while accepting People's Choice Award

The Vampire Diaries co-stars and former off-screen couple Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder won the People’s Choice Award for "Favorite Onscreen Chemistry" on Wednesday night and they addressed their real-life romance while accepting the award.

They engaged in some playful banter about their characters on the show hating each other at first, with Dobrev’s character hooking up with his brother and his character killing hers, Huffington Post reports.

“We started dating in real life," Somerhalder, 35, pointed out, with Dobrev, 24, chiming in, "And then we broke up in real life.” He added, “And yet our characters are still dating on the show.”

Dobrev concluded, "It's a good thing it's not awkward!” with Somerhalder adding, "It's a good thing we have chemistry!"

Us Weekly notes Somerhalder pulled her in for a kiss on the cheek before the exited the stage.

Dobrev and Somerhalder, who play Elena Gilbert and Damon Salvatore on their CW show, called it quits after over three years of dating last May.
