CBS gets broadcast rights to Tony Awards through 2018

CBS has snagged the broadcast rights for the Tony Awards through 2018, ensuing that the eye network will get to keep airing the ceremony that honors Broadway’s best.

CBS has been the home of the Tonys since 1978 and the network will be airing the 67th annual ceremony. Earlier this month, the network announced that How I Met Your Mother star Neil Patrick Harris will host the ceremony again. It will be his fourth time as host.

“We would like to thank CBS for their continued support of The TONY Awards," Heather Hitchens, Executive Director of the American Theatre Wing and Charlotte St. Martin, Executive Director of The Broadway League said in a joint statement released by CBS. “Their dedication to our community allows us to bring the finest of the Broadway season into the homes of our fans each and every year – and also allows us to introduce the world of theatre to new audiences across the country.”

Jack Sussman, Executive Vice President, Specials, Music and Live Events, CBS Entertainment, added, “We’re pleased to renew our commitment to the performing arts and look forward to continuing this great and long-standing partnership by bringing the best of Broadway to primetime television for many years to come.”

The 67th annual ceremony is scheduled for Sunday, June 9 and will be held at Radio City Music Hall. Kinky Boots earned the most nominations with 13, while Matilda: The Musical earned 12. Both shows are up for Best Musical against Bring It On: The Musical and A Christmas Story: The Musical.

The Best Play nominees are Lucky Guy, The Assembled Parties, The Testament of Mary and Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike.
