'True Blood' Recap: Season 6, Episode 5 - 'F*** the Pain Away'

What a wonderful, fitting title indeed.

Episode five of season six strictly revolved around the theme of pain. And even True Blood could not f*** it away, which really says something.

We’ve broken down some of the key points in tonight’s episode, which thematically centered on the emotional core of pain.

Lillith and Warlow - After the big revelation of the handsome, seemingly good-hearted Ben turning out to be a fairy vampire who was promised to Sookie, we immediately turned our backs. Tonight’s episode may have put us back in the Ben (er, Warlow) fan club, however – turns out Warlow is an extremely tortured fae-vampyr. We saw glimpses into his past from 3500 BC when Lillith sought his fairy blood out and thrusted herself upon him – literally! – turning him into a vampire and her progeny. He wasn’t able to control his vampire urges, which led him to kill his entire family, thus feeling immense remorse. Clearly, he’s not happy with his identity as a vampire and we can’t wait to learn more about his brooding soul.

Jessica and Jason - Poor Jess couldn’t control herself feeding off Andy’s fairy babies! (Luckily, one is still alive so we still get to see Andy be the wonderful father that he is.) After Jess can’t handle feeling any more guilt, she runs off to visit her star-crossed human lover Jason. She manages to get out of him some truths from the past about their relationship - that he loved everything about her and how the timing was never right for them because of Hoyt. However, this tender moment is interrupted when Sarah Newlin, who just ended an intense sexual escapade with Jason claiming it was what God wanted, rescinds her invitation and has Jessica admitted to vampire camp.

Pam and Eric
Ah, perhaps the most complex relationship. These two not only have an eternity of history together, but are so alike in their strength, charisma, and ability to mask their emotions, that they have no problem forgetting one another – until they are forced to face off against each other in front of the Governor, Steve and Sarah Newlin with large wooden stakes.

Pam was brought into therapy, AKA a questioning session to study the minds of vampires. She was asked about her relationship with her maker in which she gave a seemingly unemotional response – though we all now Pam better enough to think otherwise – where she stated she had no attachment to her maker anymore. “Pain is a useless emotion,” she says.

We’ll see how she and Eric will battle it out next week. We can’t help but feeling a little afraid because the stakes are very, very high.

Terry and Patrick
Terry is still living with the guilt of killing his close friend Patrick when the ifrit (the fire monster) allowed only one of the men to survive. Arlene is doing her best to convince Terry to move on but the pain is eating him alive. He called one of his other friends from the army out of the blue and tells him about Patrick. He wants to kill himself for doing what he did but cannot bring himself to do it, so he orders his friend to give him a couple days before he kills him.

Sookie and her parents
After five and a half seasons of believing Sookie’s parents had their daughter’s best interest in mind, tonight’s episode completely turned our minds upside down and gave us a whole other look at what really happened that night on the bridge. We felt betrayed and fooled at the same time Sookie took in Warlow’s words saying that her parents tried to kill her and that he saved her life. How’s that for the past being a place full of pain? To make matters worse, Sookie’s dad overtook Lafayette’s body during a séance where Sookie hoped to learn Warlow’s words were false. Much to Sookie’s surprise, her dad/Lafayette picked her up, threw her in the trunk and drove off to a river where he submerged her head in the water…. and where of course, the episode ended and we have to see what happens next week.

Meanwhile, Alcide, more in control than ever, is still determined to find Emma. Sam figures out his next move with Nicole and Emma but is spotted by Alcide’s father. We’re left with the cliffhanging decision as to if he will tell Alcide, as he was recently just kicked out of the pack. Back in vampire camp, Willa is given special treatment and is harassed by a security guard.

What were your thoughts on F*** the pain away? Will Warlow save Sookie again? How will the battle play out between Pam and Eric? Is pain the driving force behind the season’s storylines? Post your thoughts below and be sure to tune in for an all new episode next Sunday at 9pm on HBO.
