Kate Hudson may be a famous movie star and engaged to Muse frontman Matthew Bellamy, but that doesn’t mean that she can afford all those lavish dresses we see her wear on the red carpet. In a new interview, the Oscar nominated actress said that people don’t realize that most celebrities don’t actually own the dresses fans see them wear.

“People think we own all these dresses,” Hudson told this month’s Harper’s Bazaar, notes Today. “But we borrow them! I can’t afford to buy that stuff.”

She explained that there are only certain items that she can “splurge” on, but said that she rarely does that, since she has to pay for her children’s school.

“I’m not a big high-end fashion shopper,” she said. “I wish I could but the truth is things are just so expensive. Before Isabel Marant was a million dollars and famous, I used to go to her store in Paris and go crazy, it was so affordable.”

According to ABC News, Hudson, who was raised by her mother Goldie Hawn and Hawn’s partner Kurt Russell, said that she wasn’t raised to be materialistic. That’s a trait she’s hoping to teach her sons, Bing, 2, and Ryder, 9.

She said that Ryder, whose father is ex-husband Chris Robinson, recently got his first cell phone. “I see his friends texting people, and I just can’t do it,” she said. “The first device I got was a pager! I was 13, and it was hot pink.”

Hudson also revealed that she’s like to have her own brand, but wants it to be affordable to reach the most women possible. “Especially with the economy, it doesn’t make sense to me anymore,” she told the magazine.

Hudson recently appeared on Glee and just finished shooting Zach Braff’s Wish I Was Here.
