Wyatt Earp revolver sells at auction for $225,000

Legendary guns go for big bucks these days. A gun owned by Wyatt Earp was sold at an auction Thursday for $225,000.

The gun, a Colt .45 revolver, is believed to have been used during the O.K. Corral shootout in Tombstone, reported the Associated Press. Originally valued by the auction house between $100,000 and $150,000, the revolver was sold to a man via telephone from New Mexico.

A shotgun owned by Earp as well was sold for the lesser value of $150,000.

The auction in Scottsdale, Ariz., featured many items of Earp and his family and brought in more than $445,000 according to the J. Levine Auction & Appraisal officials.

The items sold at the auction belonged to the estate of Glenn Boyer. Boyer, who died in February of 2013, authored numerous books on Earp.

Must contriversary originally surround the credibility of the guns. However the head of the auction house, Josh Levine, responded by saying that multiple documents existed pointing to the authenticity of the guns in regards to Earp.
