Workplace productivity will probably hit a new low today in offices across the country. Google’s new Doodle isn’t just an image celebrating 40 years of the Rubik’s Cube. It is an actual Rubik’s Cube, which will drive everyone nuts trying to solve it.
The cube is a clickable version of the popular puzzle, which was invented by Erno Rubik in 1974. An architecture professor in Budapest, he initially called it the Magic Cube, but has since gone on to fame with his own name attached to it.
While speaking with USA Today last month, Rubik explained why his cube has remained so popular. He said it is similar to a blank piece of paper that you can do anything with.
“The Cube is, in some ways, like a white piece of paper,” he explained. “You have the wish to do something, to write on it, to discover the new possibilities. ... But in other ways the Cube is a really finished object, because if you add something or take apart something, it will be less.”
As the Huffington Post points out, there are now videos online to help anyone who has never been able to solve a Rubik’s Cube. There have even been videos posted in the past few hours that show how to solve the Google Doodle version. Here’s one:
