Sen. Rand Paul calls out GOP voter ID laws, says it's 'completely crazy'

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky) broke from party lines and blasted Republicans' continual push to introduce more voter ID laws everywhere they can.

Speaking with The New York Times, he said the constant move towards more restrictive voter ID laws often alienate minorities the GOP should instead be courting.

"Everybody's gone completely crazy on this voter ID thing," the senator said. "I think it's wrong for Republicans to go too crazy on this issue because it's offending people."

Though he feels the push is overdone, Paul still backs the idea of voters showing identification at voting polls. The Kentucky senator believes that by introducing these laws so often is politically damaging.

According to CBS News, 30 states have passed new voter ID laws, with Republicans claiming it will reduce voter fraud. Some of the laws have since been struck down in court and Democrats argue that minorities and the poor are adversely affected by strict voter ID laws that are attempting to solve a problem that doesn't actually exist.
