Sony, Hulu in talks to renew 'Community' for online sixth season

Disappointed fans of NBC’s recently cancelled comedy series Community may have not have to give up hope for new episodes after all.

TheWrap reports that “an individual with knowledge of the situation” has informed them that Hulu and Sony Pictures Television are in preliminary talks to revive the series for a sixth season.

Community’s five seasons are currently available on Hulu, which owns exclusive rights to digitally distribute repeat episodes of the higher education-lampooning series. Community has been successful on Hulu due to its strong online fanbase. Therefore, Hulu would be the ideal streaming site for an internet-only sixth season.

This news comes shortly after Hulu competitor Netflix declined to host a new season as it did for Arrested Development.

NBC cancelled Community in March due to consistently weak Nielsen ratings, which track series’ popularity according to live broadcast viewership. However, the show survived for five seasons due to its dedicated, if relatively small, audience.

Comedy Central currently holds television syndication rights for the show’s five seasons.
