Texas police fatally shoot 93-year-old woman

A police officer in a central Texas town shot and killed a 93-year-old woman in her house on Tuesday saying she was brandishing a gun.

A Hearne police officer was responding to a 911 call involving a woman with a gun at a residence and Officer Steven Stem found himself face-to-face with Pearlie Golden, reports The Associated Press. The officer was forced to shoot her several times after she reportedly "brandished a firearm."

According to CNN, the case is being investigated by Texas Rangers and they are said to have the gun, a revolver, that Golden allegedly had in her possession.

Stem was placed on administrative leave and the Hearne City Council will look into whether any further action against the police officer is needed.

Neighbors said they didn't understand the need to shoot the old woman, notes KBTX. "Even if she did have a gun, she is in her 90's," Lawanda Cooke said. "They could have shot in the air to scare her. Maybe she would have dropped it. I don't see her shooting anyone.

Hearne is a small town 150 miles south of Dallas with a population of about 4,600 residents.
