George Zimmerman's defamation lawsuit against NBC partially dismissed

A judge tossed part of a defamation lawsuit on Thursday filed by the infamous George Zimmerman against NBC News over the editing of the 911 call he made on the night he shot Trayvon Martin.

Florida court spokesman Michelle Kennedy said Judge Debra Nelson threw out Zimmerman's claim against WTVJ reporter Jeff Burnside, reports NBC News. She said that Zimmerman's lawyer failed to properly notify Burnside as required by Florida law.

"We appreciated the opportunity, at the outset of the case, to present our arguments at today's hearing why it should not proceed further," NBC said. Nelson has indicated she will soon rule on NBCUniversal's motion for summary judgement.

Zimmerman filed a lawsuit against NBC, claiming that the news network intentionally edited the 911 call to make him appear racist, though in reality, he was merely answering a question asked by the dispatcher, according to Reuters.

The tape would be aired several times on Today and a Florida NBC station and led to the eventual dismissal of two news employees.

Zimmerman was in the news during 2012 and 2013 after he confessed to shooting the unarmed Martin, but claimed self-defense under Florida's "stand your ground" law. He was acquitted, which sparked protests and Zimmerman floated in an out of the news for various other issues afterwards.
