Meryl Streep to play opera legend Maria Callas in new HBO movie

Meryl Streep takes on the role of Maria Callas for the HBO film, Master Class.

Streep has played famous women, previously. The Academy Award winning actress has taken on roles as Margaret Thatcher, Anna Wintour, and Julia Child, according to Page Six.

In the movie, Streep will play the famous singer who leads opera students through opera classes at Juilliard in 1971, according to Playbill

Maria Callas is an opera legend who married Greek shipping magnet, Aristotle Onassis. Director Mike Nichols is slated to direct the film. Nichols previously worked with Streep on several films.

The original Broadway play opened at Broadway’s John Golden Theatre on Nov. 5, 1995. The Tony Award winning play starred Zoe Caldwell as Callas. Actress Patti LuPone later accepted the role. It was written by Terrence McNally. Filming will begin in January 2015.

Streep won an Oscar for the film, The Devil Wears Prada, Sophie’s Choice, and Kramer vs. Kramer. The Academy Award winning actress is originally from Summit, New Jersey.
