Joaquin Phoenix could be Marvel's 'Doctor Strange' (Report)

It looks like the race to play Marvel’s Doctor Strange is in its last lap, with Joaquin Phoenix emerging as the victor.

TheWrap is reporting this afternoon that Phoenix is being considered for the role, but there is no contract signed. The site’s sources claims that he has been in talks with Marvel.

This sounds like a rather uncharacteristic move for Phoenix, who has picked prestige projects like The Master, Her and The Immigrant as of late. He just wrapped work on Paul Thomas Anderson’s Inherent Vice and is now working with Woody Allen and Emma Stone.

Speaking of that Allen project, it is being filmed in New England. According to Indiewire, there have been tweets from people in Connecticut about Phoenix being spotted buying Doctor Strange comics.

Strange will be directed by Scott Derrickson (The Exorcism of Emily Rose) and written by Jon Spathis (Prometheus). It doesn’t have a release date, but is expected to be among Marvel’s Phase Three releases, following Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Marvel's Comic-Con panel is this weekend, so stay tuned for updates.
