Billy Crystal picked for Emmys Robin Williams tribute, Sara Bareilles to perform 'In Memoriam' segment

One comedy legend will remember another legend during this year’s Primetime Emmys, the first major Hollywood awards show since Robin Williams’ death last week. The Television Academy has picked Billy Crystal to remember Williams.

Emmys executive producer Don Mischer made the announcement on Tuesday. No further plans for the segment were announced, but it could be similar to last year’s special “In Memoriam” segments. In fact, during that ceremony, Williams himself appeared to remember his idol, Jonathan Winters.

In addition, singer/songwriter Sara Bareilles has been picked to perform during the segment. Entertainment Weekly notes that Bareilles did recently dedicate her song “Hercules” to the beloved actor, but Mischer didn’t say if that would be the song she will perform.

Mischer vowed last week to give Williams an “appropriate and meaningful” tribute during the ceremony, which takes place on Monday, Aug. 25 on NBC.

Williams died on Aug. 11 at age 63, following a battle with depression and after he was recently diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.

After his death, Crystal sent a simple, two-word tweet:
