Marvel's 'Ant-Man' starring Paul Rudd and Michael Douglas starts production

Now that all the behind the scenes drama is over, another ambitious project from Marvel, Ant-Man, is ready to roll in front of the camera. Director Peyton Reed confirmed the news on Twitter.

Reed, who is better known for helming comedies like Yes Man and The Break-Up, wrote on Monday morning “Alright, gang. Today is the day. LET'S. GET. small.”

Ant-Man is an ambitious project for Marvel and Disney simply because this is yet another obscure character from the comics that the studio is trying to sell to the general public. Although the character - who can change sizes at will - has been a member of the Avengers, this will be his first time on the big screen. With big stars Paul Rudd and Michael Douglas in the cast, filling movie theaters shouldn’t be hard.

Of course, Ant-Man is also known for losing its first director, Edgar Wright. The Shaun of the Dead filmmaker had been working on the project for years, but he left in May. A few weeks later, Reed was hired, much to many fans’ disappointment.

Still, Reed knows that he has a challenge ahead of him, especially since many were hoping for a Marvel movie with Wright’s unique fingerprints on it. Reed said last month that he has exchanged emails with Wright.

According to Latino Review, Ant-Man might also feature some Marvel cameos in its opening, including Howard Stark, Arnim Zola, Peggy Carter and a young version of Alexander Price, Robert Redford’s character in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The site believes that this scene will survive to the final cut, especially since the Agent Carter series is coming soon.

We won’t really know for sure though until Ant-Man opens in July 17, 2015.
