Washington Nationals acquire Matt Thornton

Left-handed pitcher Matt Thornton was acquired by the Washington Nationals from the New York Yankees on Tuesday. He was traded off of waivers.

Getting Thornton wasn’t the only move that the Nationals made. Catcher Wilson Ramos was put on the paternity list. Sandy Leon was called up from Triple-A Syracuse to fill in for Ramos. The Nationals also put right-hander Taylor Jordan on the 60-day disabled list to make room for Thornton, according to the Associated Press. This will be the third time that Leon has joined the Nationals this season.

Ramos is expecting his first child with his wife. He is hitting .290 with three homeruns and 25 RBIs in 49 games this season.

Thornton was drafted 22nd overall by the Seattle Mariners in the 1998 draft. He has played for the Mariners, Chicago White Sox, Boston Red Sox, and the Yankees. He is in the first year of a two-year, $7 million contract with the Yankees. The Nationals will assume the rest of the contract. Thornton is 0-3 with a 2.55 ERA this season, according to ESPN. In 11 seasons in the major he has a 32-45 record and a 3.49 ERA.

Trading Thornton was a good move for the Yankees. They will save about $4 million by trading him. The Yankees have called up Rich Hill from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to replace Thornton for now.
