'The D.U.F.F' is a comedy for everyone

The new film The D.U.F.F premiered yesterday, and it’s a teen comedy focusing on the pressures of high school such as, peer pressure and self-image, bullying and cyberbullying. The term D.U.F.F stands for Designated Ugly Fat Friend. The premise of the movie is to help people realize that not everyone may be fat or ugly in their group of friends, but there’s always that one person that may not feel as pretty or good looking as their other friends. The film stars Robbie Amell, Mae Whitman, Ken Jeong, Bella Thorne, and many other accredited actors and actresses.

In the film, Bianca is told by her neighbor who is kind of nice to her, that she’s the D.U.F.F of her group of friends. She then looks at herself and her friends differently, and desperately doesn’t want to be the D.U.F.F anymore, leading them to have a fight. Throughout the movie, she becomes closer to her neighbor Wesley, as she helps him get his grade up in Chemistry, and he helps her become more approachable and popular. As Bianca and Wesley continue to grow closer as friends, Wes’ on again off again girlfriend Madison keeps getting in the way and trying to sabotage Bianca. After many lessons from Wesley and many videos leaked from their lessons thanks to Madison, Bianca gets what she wanted out of the experiment. Essentially to talk to Toby Tucker, a guy she has a crush on.

Bianca has a date with Toby, and realizes he’s not the guy she dreamed of. She leaves him and goes to find Wesley, only to find him with Madison at Bianca’s special spot in the woods. Later that night, Wesley finally gets Bianca’s message and heads over to her house only to find an upset Bianca. She then proceeds to tell him that she likes him, but he’s back with Madison.
Near the end of the movie, we see the high school have their Homecoming dance and Madison and Wes are crowned Homecoming Queen and King. With Madison on stage already accepting her crown, Wes can’t decide if he should join her, or leave the dance early with Bianca. He chooses the latter, and earns applause from fellow classmates.

In the film, peer pressure and self-image, cyberbullying, bullying are important topics in the storyline. In high school everyone is feeling the pressure to be perfect and to be just like everyone else; but in reality we’re all a little different than our friends. Bullying and cyberbullying play a large role in the plotline as well; when videos of Bianca messing around in a store with a mannequin acting like it’s Toby, when the video went viral through the school, Bianca got attention but not the kind she was hoping for with people laughing at her and mean comments.
