Denzel Washington to star in 'The Equalizer' sequel

Sony said on Wednesday that it will be making a sequel to The Equalizer, the hit action movie that starred Denzel Washington last year.

The original film reunited him with Antoine Fuqua, who directed him in Training Day. Washington played a retired government operative who thinks he can run from his past. He’s pretty good at avoiding it, until he gets the itch to save Chloe Grace Moretz from Russian gangsters. It was also based on the ‘80s TV series.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio expects Washington to return, but it might be difficult to get Fuqua back. The director just made Southpaw with Jake Gyllenhaal and is then supposed to make MGM’s Magnificent Seven remake with Washington and Ethan Hawke. After that, he will go back to work with Gyllenhaal on The Man Who Made It Snow.

The Equalizer hit theaters in September 2014 and made $192 million worldwide.

Sony’s other CinemaCon announcements included a Spider-Man movie from Christopher Miller and Phil Lord and updates on Ang Lee’s Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk.
