Since CNN actually made a real video to air in case Doomsday came and it appears that the network never made a new one, John Oliver has come to the rescue. During last night’s episode of Last Week Tonight, Oliver aired a new Doomsday video with narration from actor Martin Sheen.
Back in January, the creepy CNN video that Ted Turner made during the early days of the network leaked on the web. It showed a military band playing “Nearer My God, to Thee,” the same tune played as the Titanic sank. (Of course, Oliver knows that they really heard “My Heart Will Go On.”)
Since the video was made in the ‘80s and is in really poor quality, Oliver decided that a new Doomsday video is necessary for any network as we near the end of the world. In the clip, Sheen narrates clips of great things that humanity has done, from discovering fire to creating clear tunnels to help us walk underwater.
“We were the first species to evolve to walk on two legs and then invented a way not to,” Sheen says as clips of people on Segways roll. “But perhaps our greatest achievement of all was our total domination of every other species. Nice try, lions... unless we’re all dying because lions evolved and conquered the human race. In which case, well played lions.”
The video also includes a quick blooper reel, before ending with an adorable video of cats in a bar and a great trick basketball shot.
