Shortly after Universal’s CinemaCon presentation in Las Vegas on Thursday, the studio announced new release dates for three big upcoming films. Sadly, the news means that monster fans will have to wait for more Pacific Rim and longer for the Mummy reboot.
The Mummy was previously scheduled for release on June 24, 2016. The new date for the film is now March 24, 2017.
The delay means that the untitled Universal Monster franchise follow-up will also have to be delayed. It was supposed to be out on April 21, 2017, but has now been pushed to March 30, 2018.
The new version of The Mummy is set to kick off a new Universal Monsters cinematic universe, which will be overseen by Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan. Kurtzman is directing The Mummy from a Jon Spaihts script.
Up next for Universal is Guillermo Del Toro’s Pacific Rim 2. That was supposed to be released on April 7, 2017, but has now been pushed to Aug. 4, 2017.
Mena, which reteams Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman with Tom Cruise, is set for release on Jan. 6, 2017. The studio must be hoping that American Sniper’s January 2015 success could be repeated, but there is one big difference. Sniper had a limited release in December to qualify for the 2014 Oscars. Does Universal not expect this movie to be an awards contender?
Universal also delayed the Warcraft movie by three months. It is now scheduled for June 10, 2016.
In other Universal news, Fifty Shades Darker hits theaters on Feb. 10, 2017 and Fifty Shades Freed opens on Feb. 9, 2018. Furious 8 hits theaters on April 14, 2017.
