Neil Gaiman's 'American Gods' finally gets greenlight from Starz

The long-gestating television adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s fantasy novel American Gods has finally earned a greenlight from a network. Starz announced the news today, with Bryan Fuller and Michael Green set as showrunners.

Gaiman’s 2001 novel centers on a war between gods with biblical and mythological roots as they grapple with a society that increasingly ignores them. The main character is Shadow Moon, an ex-con who travels with Mr. Wednesday, a conman who is really an older god.

“I am thrilled, ‎scared, delighted, nervous and a ball of glorious anticipation,” Gaiman said in a statement. “The team that is going to bring the world of American Gods to the screen has been assembled like the master criminals in a caper movie: I'm relieved and confident that my baby is in good hands. Now we finally move to the exciting business that fans have been doing for the last dozen years: casting our Shadow, our Wednesday, our Laura...”

“Starz is committed to bring American Gods to its legions of fans. With our partners at FremantleMedia and with Bryan, Michael and Neil guiding the project, we hope to create a series that honors the book and does right by the fans, who have been casting it in their minds for years. The search for Shadow begins today!” Starz CEO Chris Albrecht added.

The project has been in the works for years, with HBO starting development in 2011, just after Game of Thrones first premiered. However, the show didn’t move forward there at all and moved to Starz in July 2014, after FreemantleMedia picked up the series in February 2014.

Fuller is best known for Pushing Daisies and NBC’s current Hannibal series, which is now in its third season. Green wrote for Smallville, Kings and The River. Both Fuller and Green worked on the original run of NBC’s Heroes.
