The New York Knicks traded guard Tim Hardaway Jr. to the Atlanta Hawks Thursday night.
In return the Knicks will get Notre Dame point guard Jerian Grant. The Hawks had selected Grant for the Knicks with the 19th pick. The team had sent the 15th pick to the Washington Wizards for the 19th pick and two future second-round picks, according to Yahoo Sports. The Wizards used the 15th pick on Kelly Oubre.
“I was extremely excited just to be here, just to have an opportunity to come in and make the team better and be able to contribute right away. I’m excited for that,” Grant said. “The triangle (offense) has high basketball IQ players, and I think I’m one of those. I pick up on the offense really quickly and help the guys around me.”
He went on to say that he’s excited to play in Madison Square Garden.
Grant was a starter for Notre Dame for four years. He averaged 14.6 points and 5.8 assists in 119 games with the Irish, according to the New York Daily News. As a senior he was a first-team All-American, and led the Irish to the Elite Eight.
Hardaway is signed through the 2016-17 season. He will make $1.3 million next season and has a 2016-17 team option for $2.3 million. Last season he averaged 11.5 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 1.8 assists with the Knicks.
The Knicks selected Latvian forward Kristaps Porzingis with the fourth overall pick. They have also acquired second-round pick Guillermo Hernangomez from the Philadelphia 76ers.
