During all the drama surrounding the ending of The View’s 18th season, political commentator Nicolle Wallace was shown the door, along with actress Rosie Perez. While talking about her experience on the daytime talker, Wallace revealed this week that she didn’t even know she was fired until she saw it in the media.

After weeks of rumors, reports in July confirmed that Wallace was not coming back for a second season of the ABC show. Sources suggested that the network was not happy that she wasn’t as comfortable talking about celebrities as the other co-hosts.

But if these executives were unhappy with her performance, they never told her. In an interview with Variety, Wallace, who was a communications chief for President George W. Bush, said she never received a note from ABC about this. However, she admits that she probably should have seen the radio silence as bad news.

“I had never had one note from anybody inside the entire organization during the entire season. No one said a word to me,” Wallace said. “Maybe I should have seen it coming. Not after a single show, a single Hot Topic or a single interview. It was like being invisible. But not in an unpleasant way.”

Even though she doesn’t hold a grudge, she was still surprised to learn from Variety that she was leaving The View before ABC told her. Even after that, ABC never told her directly. She said they called her agent and suggested she take a one-day-a-week contributor role. If it was two days a week, she would have considered it, but they weren’t interested.

Wallace is also currently a contributor on MSNBC and can be seen on Morning Joe occasionally. Despite the fact that she comes from a purely political background, she told Variety that she was always interested in being in The View and always watched it.

“For me, I was sort of like Forrest Gump. I was standing there and all this crazy stuff was happening, but I didn’t know anything different. I loved it all,” Wallace said of her experience. “Was it difficult? It was my first foray into that world. I was on the Sarah Palin campaign, so I’d certainly seen extraordinary and dramatic things take place before. There were some extraordinary and dramatic moments during the Rosie O’Donnell part of the season. I don’t think she felt it was what she signed up for, so there was some exasperation.”
