Julia Roberts' 'My Best Friend's Wedding' getting TV series at ABC

My Best Friend’s Wedding, Julia Roberts’ 1997 romantic comedy with Dermot Mulroney, also starring Rupert Everett and a young Cameron Diaz, stole all of our hearts and continues to be a cult classic today. That’s why the film could be getting picked up for a TV series.

Ron Bass, who wrote the original screenplay, is in the works of turning the script into a half-hour comedy for ABC. He will write the script with Jessica Amento.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the single-camera comedy will be executive produced by Bass, Jerry and Janet Zucker, who worked on the film, and Mike Menchel. Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison Television has acquired the rights to produce it with Sony Pictures Television.

The television show would start where the film ended, with Julianne Potter and her best friend George (played by Everett in the film) living in New York City. With that said, the show will be more a sequel than a reboot. No word yet on who will play Roberts or Everett's original roles.
