Trailer Weekly: ‘Barbershop: The Next Cut,’ ‘Demolition’ and ’10 Cloverfield Lane’

This week’s column spans the movie genre universe going from comedy to dramedy with a dash mystery/sci-fi mixed in.

Barbershop: The Next Cut has Calvin and his crew returning yet again and this time, they must work together to save both their beloved shop and their neighborhood. Demolition tells the story of a prosperous investment banker whose life unravels after he loses his wife in a horrible car crash. Finally, 10 Cloverfield Lane follows a young woman, who after waking up after a car accident finds herself in the basement of a man who says he saved from a worldwide chemical attack.

All three films have talented celebrities in their casts, which is sure to make their fans flock to their nearest theater to see these movies. In addition, each film’s demonstrates new and distinctive features of its particular genre, making viewing each motion picture a truly satisfying movie experience.

Barbershop: The Next Cut is the sequel to 2004’s Barbershop 2: Back in Business and the fourth film in the Barbershop movie franchise. Returning cast members include Ice Cube, Cedric the Entertainer, Sean Patrick Thomas, Eve and Troy Garity with new additions such as Queen Latifah, Anthony Anderson, Regina Hall, Garcelle Beauvais, Common and Nicki Minaj.

This time around, we see that Calvin’s Barbershop, once a bastion of testosterone, is now co-ed. Plus, Calvin (Ice Cube) and his crew must face a new challenge, saving their precious shop and their neighborhood, which has been overrun by gangs. This comedy’s trailer shows how the co-ed dynamic hasn’t stopped the laughter, but outside, things have gotten really bad as gangs have infiltrated the neighborhood and those who work at Calvin’s Barbershop must figure out how to protect their shop and save their community. It opens in theaters on Friday, April 15.

Demolition is a dramedy starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Chris Cooper and Naomi Watts. The film revolves around Davis Mitchell (Gyllenhaal), who is a thriving investment banker, whose life is torn to shreds when his wife perishes in a horrifying car crash. The motion picture’s trailer illustrates how Davis tries to pick up the pieces of his life following his wife’s death, but can’t seem to do so. Yet, he eventually forms an unlikely connection with Karen Moreno (Watts), a customer service rep at the vending machine company Davis writes complaint letters to. The feature’s trailer displays how Gyllanhaal through splashes of comedic inner dialogue mingled with tragedy finally opens up and allows his personal feelings to unfurl in these missives about his late wife, his life of routine, what he wasn’t paying attention to and how he’s working to change and rebuild his life from the ground up. It opens in theaters on Friday, April 8.

10 Cloverfield Lane is a mystery/sci-fi flick starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead, John Goodman and John Gallagher Jr. (The Newsroom). This enigmatic tale has a young woman named Michelle (Winstead), finding herself in a man’s (Goodman) basement following a car accident. The man then tells Michelle that he saved her life from a global chemical attack that has made living above ground impossible. This cryptic movie’s trailer expresses Michelle reluctance to believe what the man has told her and her struggle to get to the surface, to find out the truth, no matter what that might be. It opens in theaters on Friday, March 11.
