Film News Wrap Up April 21: 'Sherlock Holmes 3' and 'Jason Bourne'

Today in film news, a new Sherlock Holmes movie with Robert Downey Jr. is apparently still happening. The actor spoke to ShortList and said that there is some preliminary work being done on Sherlock Holmes 3 at the moment and they’re going to attempt to make it later this year. It’s unclear whether director Guy Ritchie will be able to fit the film into his schedule, though, seeing as he’s currently hard at work on Knights of the Roundtable: King Arthur.

We have some news about the new Jungle Book movie! No, not the Disney film that just opened in theaters this past weekend; there is yet another Jungle Book movie coming out titled Jungle Book: Origins. Universal's adaptation of Rudyard Kipling’s book has just added Alfonso Cuaron as a consultant, according to Deadline. Cuaron won an Oscar for his work on Gravity and he also directed films such as Children of Men and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Jungle Book: Origins stars Andy Serkis, Benedict Cumberbatch, Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett and Matthew Rhys.

Universal has released the first official trailer for Jason Bourne. In the footage, we see Matt Damon’s famous action hero coming out of hiding and being pursued by the CIA for the fourth time, defending himself in increasingly complicated ways. One interesting thing to note is that the trailer references Edward Snowden and indeed director Paul Greengrass says the movie will very much reflect the post-Snowden world we’re living in. Jason Bourne will be released on July 29.

We also saw the first trailer for The Founder, the new movie telling the true story of the rise of McDonald’s. Michael Keaton plays Ray Kroc, the real life businessman who helped expand McDonald’s into the largest restaurant chain in the world. It’s directed by John Lee Hancock, who most recently directed another movie about a real businessman, tackling Walt Disney in Saving Mr. Banks. After Birdman and Spotlight, it seems every Michael Keaton movie is now blessed with good luck, so let's see if The Founder can keep the streak going.

The Blade Runner sequel will be hitting theaters even earlier than expected. According to Variety, Alcon Entertainment has moved Blade Runner 2 from January 2018 to October 2017. Harrison Ford returns in this followup directed by Denis Villeneuve (Sicario). Also starring are Ryan Gosling, Robin Wright and Dave Bautista.

We had heard rumors that Spider-Man: Homecoming would feature some of the Avengers and that has now been confirmed. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Robert Downey Jr. has joined the cast of Spider-Man: Homecoming. Iron Man and Spider-Man supposedly have an interesting relationship in Captain America: Civil War that will continue in this film. Marvel is big on having more than one Avenger in their movies lately, as Thor: Ragnarok is set to feature both Thor and the Hulk.

Hope you weren’t too invested in the upcoming Terminator movies. We learned today that Emilia Clarke, who portrayed Sarah Connor in Terminator Genisys, will not be returning for any future sequels, according to Coming Soon. Skydance’s plans for the franchise are a bit up in the air after Genisys bombed at the box office, but their CCO Dana Goldberg has previously said the sequels were being “readjusted.” With Clarke gone, they’ll certainly have to do some more readjusting.

Some updates on the Hasbro Cinematic Universe, which is still actually happening. Hasbro is producing a series of movies based on its toy lines and they have now assembled a full writers room to craft the franchise. It consists of Brian K. Vaughan (Y: The Last Man), Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy), Cheo Coker (Luke Cage), John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein (Spider-Man: Homecoming), Joe Robert Cole (The People v OJ Simpson), Jeff Pinkner (Dark Tower) and a few other very talented writers. Upcoming Hasbro movies are expected to include Micronauts, Visionaries, M.A.S.K. (Mobile Armored Strike Kommand) and ROM, plus more Transformers movies than you'll know what to do with.
