Winter is still a year away

Hopefully, you weren't expecting HBO's Game of Thrones to return any time soon.

HBO has announced that Game of Thrones will not return until 2019, according to a post on their website. The eighth and final season will feature six episodes that will likely run longer than an hour each.

While it's been speculated that it won't return until next year, the wait still won't be easy. Luckily, the show is remaining in the hands of those who have made it great so far.

David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are both returning as writers, directors and executive producers of the show. The duo has been handling the show since it's beginning.

David Nutter and Miguel Sapochnik are also returning as directors. Sapochnik is best known for his directing for the Game of Thrones episode 'The Battle of the Bastards,' which arguably featured the most epic battle in the show.

On top of that,  Bryan Cogman and Dave Hill are returning as writers and Carolyn Strauss, Frank Doelger and Bernadette Caulfield will be executive producers. George R.R. Martin will remain as a co-executive producer.

As for the future of the Game of Thrones franchise post-season 8, HBO is still planning up to 5 'spin-off' series. While it may not include the same stars that make up the current story, Bryan Cogman will still be involved as a writer.

David Benioff and D.B. Weiss look like they're moving on as a duo, however. The two have been tapped as the writers and producers of a new Star Wars series.
