9. It wasn't always the last Monday in May.

When the Uniform Monday Holiday Act was passed in 1968, four holidays were moved from their traditional dates to a specific Monday to create three-day weekends. This changed Memorial Day from May 30 to the last Monday in May. The act also changed the dates of Washington's Birthday, Columbus Day and Veterans Day, though Veterans Day was changed back to its original date in 1978.
