Joss Whedon is working on a new sci-fi series for HBO

No, it's not Firefly 2.0 either.

After spending some time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Joss Whedon has decided that it’s time to return to television.

The filmmaker who created the now beloved Firefly and Buffy the Vampire Slayer is working on a new sci-fi series for HBO called The Nevers.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the series is “an epic science fiction drama about a gang of Victorian women who find themselves with unusual abilities, relentless enemies and a mission that might change the world.”

HBO picked up The Nevers after engaging in a lengthy bidding war with Netlifx.

“We have long been fans of the incredibly talented and prolific Joss Whedon and we can’t think of a better project than The Nevers with which to welcome him to the HBO family,” HBO programming president Casey Bloys said via Variety.

“We look forward to meeting the strange, multifaceted characters of The Nevers, to learn their stories, see them in action and share them with our viewers.”

Same here, Bloys.

Whedon also offered a statement of his own:

The Nevers may be the most ambitious narrative I’ve created, and I can’t imagine a better home for it than HBO. Not only are they the masters of cinematic long-form, but their instant understanding of my odd, intimate epic was as emotional as it was incisive.”

I have to agree with Whedon on this one too — while we don’t know much about The Nevers, this idea world seems like it might have more in common with Game of Thrones or Westworld than it would a Netflix property.

Whedon has just started creating The Nevers, so it’ll likely be awhile before we actually see it premiere on television. Hopefully, though, it won’t be too long before we get some more details and casting announcements.
