Marvel schedules 'Captain America 3' against 'Batman vs. Superman'

Marvel finally announced that Captain America 3 will be the film to go head-to-head with Warner Bros.' Batman vs. Superman on the weekend of May 6, 2016.

It was previously known that Marvel had marked that weekend for a film, but hadn't announced what it would be yet. Interest in what they would slot there was raised when back in January, it had been announced that the Man of Steel sequel, which doesn't truly have a title yet, was being moved back from a summer 2015 date. The old date has since been given to Joe Wright's Pan.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the date could change in the future if the film's production schedule goes awry or if Disney and Marvel decide they don't want to go up against another superhero film. The site notes that few believe the two films will actually open that weekend.

There is another slot a couple of months later on July 8 that Marvel also has scheduled for another yet-unnamed film that Captain America 3 could move to if there prove to be any problems on the film.

THR notes that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige does seem unafraid of going up against the Warner Bros. film and publicly noted that Marvel would not be moving from the spot as they had a film slotted for that weekend first.

Captain America 2 opens this weekend in theaters.
