Lewis to direct his first musical.
Jerry Lewis, who directed, co-wrote, and starred in the 1963 version of “The Nutty Professor,” will be directing the musical adaptation of the film. The music will be written by award-winning composer Marvin Hamlisch and the lyrics by Tony winner Rupert Holmes, writes Entertainment Weekly.
According to the New York Times, Lewis has already been on the Broadway stage as an actor for “Damn Yankees” in 1995, and performed in “Jerry Lewis at the Palace” in 1953.
“The Nutty Professor” is a story about Julius Kelp, a timid little geek who creates a potion that turns him into a suave ladies' man called Buddy Love for a short period of time. A successful remake was created in 1996 starring Eddie Murphy.
According to Playbill News, Hamlisch said about the upcoming musical, “It’s a thrill to be working with Jerry Lewis, a true king of comedy, and bringing this classic story to life on Broadway with music.” Holmes is equally excited to be working with Lewis, saying that the comedian was his boyhood hero, and that to work with him is “a privilege and thrill beyond measure.”
The musical will open on Broadway during the 2010-2011 season.
