It's late at a BBQ place in the city, where a Kira and Uncle Teddy are working and closing up. Just before Teddy closed the doors, masked men charge in to rob restaurant. Kira tells them they should be ashamed of themselves. They hit Teddy over the head with a bottle, but they shoot and kill Kira.
Cal is at home "working" on his book... but Emily catches him playing online poker instead. She starts to admonish him, but they are interrupted by Detective Wallowsky at their door. Wallowsky came to tell him about the murder and robbery -- and it's personal. Kira's dad is a longtime friend. He's dying of cancer, and Wallowsky wants him to know why Kira was killed before he dies. Jimmy, who owns the restaurant, and Wallowsky go back a few years when she arrested his then-teenaged sons Marcus and Rudy a few times. She says Jimmy is a good man.
Wallowsky gives Cal a DVD of footage taken from the security camera, and Cal takes it to work and views it. Cal feels Kira's death was intentional. He thinks that is the real motive of the crime. He also tells Gillian that they are taking the case on pro bono for Wallowsky. This fact increases Gillian's curiosity -- and maybe sparks a little jealousy -- about the mysterious Wallowsky. She wants to meet this woman. Cal also thinks it may be an inside job, so he has Eli and Ria to interview all the employees. But they come up with nothing; no one is lying and they all have alibi's.
Cal then talks to Teddy, who says he knows the killers. He thinks that Jimmy and Teddy may have some issues in their long relationship. They regard each other as brothers, "coming up" together and being there for each other since they were young kids. Cal wonders if there may be some unresolved problem, because Jimmy is the owner and Teddy is just an employee.
Cal also arranges to get Jimmy's two wayward sons, Marcus and Rudy, to the Lightman Group to see what they know and if they have any involvement in the murder. They both claim to have not seen Kira for weeks. He puts them in a cube and a fight breaks out between them when Marcus tells them Kira is dead and he thinks Rudy did it. Cal is content to watch the fight, but Wallowsky breaks it up and takes Rudy away. Cal also realizes that Marcus is deaf in one ear as a result of being hit by Rudy years ago when they had attempted to rob their dad's restaurant -- a stunt that got them both written out of Jimmy's will. Cal knows that Marcus is lying about not having seen Kira.
Later, Wallowsky returns with a witness; a hooker who says her druggy boyfriend killed Kira. Cal isn't sold on this -- he still thinks it's an inside job, but the police not only have the gun, but ballistics match it to the bullet in Kira's head. Cal and Wallowsky bring in the suspects: Eddie the dope-head and his pal Nick. Nick is clearly the sharper of the two and says nothing. But a hungover and weak Eddie folds and admits they were paid to kill Kira, but he doesn't know who hired them. He doesn't recognize a picture of Marcus though.
Cal, still not giving up on his inside job theory, takes Gillian to meet Marcus at the restaurant. He wants to know why Marcus lied about seeing Kira just days before her murder. Cal does what Cal does, and in his loud bombastic way, he accuses Marcus of killing Kira so the brothers could inherit the business. He denies the accusation, and then he confesses that he did meet with Kira after she called him. She wanted her brothers to make up with their dad before he died. He lied because he was afraid his past crimes and bad relationship with his dad would make the police think he killed Kira. He also tells Cal that Marcus is a "lost cause." Just after he says that, Marcus, who overheard the whole thing, comes into the room. But instead of fighting they talk, and Gillian thinks the brothers are more interested with making amends with each other than finding their sister's killer.
Going in another direction, Cal has Wallowsky bring Teddy to the police station to look at a lineup with both Nick and Eddie in it. He says he really can't identify the killers; they had masks on, he says. But Cal notices that Nick recognizes Teddy and realizes that Teddy is the onside connection. He tells Teddy that he not only hired Nick and Eddie to kill Kira, but he tried to pin it on Marcus and Rudy. That way, Teddy gets the restaurant when Jimmy dies.
Teddy says this isn't true, and Gillian agrees. Cal, though, is sure he is right. Cal goes back to talk to Jimmy. Jimmy isn't too happy to see Cal, because he is still angry that Cal had first accused his sons of killing Kira. "Now your accusing my best friend?" he asks. Cal tries to tell a disbelieving Jimmy that Teddy not only had Kira killed, but he also tried to put the blame on his sons. That way who gets the restaurant? Cal tells Jimmy that he can either swallow his lies and go quietly or die with his eyes open.
At the restaurant, Wallowsky and Teddy are talking; she is apologizing to Teddy. She is interrupted by a call saying Jimmy is near death. Teddy rushes over to his side and tells Cal you did this to him. Cal responds by saying it was Kira's death that did this to him. Wallowsky tells Teddy machines are the only thing keeping Jimmy alive now. She also says that Jimmy has changed his will, wants Teddy to inherit the restaurant, and has given Teddy power-of-attorney over his affairs. She tells him he can sign the order to stop the machines.
Teddy picks up the pen, looking like he is about to sign the order, when Cal enters. He says it's saying cancer that is killing Jimmy - not Kira's death. But her death is killing Teddy. Cal says you were about to sign that order, without talking to Jimmy's sons, the doctors or anyone. You didn't even think about it, your already had your mind made up.
Suddenly irate and very alive, Jimmy pops up out of bed and starts yelling at Teddy for getting Kira killed, betraying him, and taking all he had left. Teddy still denies everything, but he is arrested and taken away. A defeated Jimmy sits down and says to Cal, "My eyes are wide open."
Then, hesitantly, Marcus and Rudy enter the room. Jimmy looks at them for a long moment and smiles. Cal returns home, where Emily orders him to start working on his book.
