Stephen Colbert made big news last week when he said he was officially running in the Republican primary in his home state of South Carolina. The problem was, he was too late to apply to get his name on the ballot and there is no write-in space on the South Carolina ballot.
But he wouldn't be Stephen Colbert if he let little things like laws get in his way. Colbert was in South Carolina today and was serving up another round of I-can't-tell-if-he's-being-serious-or-not politics when he held a rally for former Republican candidate Herman Cain. Colbert's ploy: since he could not get his name on the ballot and Cain's does, despite having dropped out of the race in December, throw his support behind Cain and convince people to vote for him instead. The Washington Post reports that the rally, which Colbert called the "Rock Me Like a Herman Cain South Cain-olina Primary," started off with a gospel version of "This Little Light of Mine" (with Colbert harmonizing) and a crowd chant of "U.S.A.!"
"Whoever said you can't go home again did not have access to a private jet," Colbert said to the crowd.
The rally, which according to the L.A. Times, was held on the College of Charleston campus, and was attended by an estimated 3,000 plus people.
Whether those people were there to support Republicans, Democrats or just wanted to see what Colbert was up to, people agreed that Colbert makes the campaign a little bit more fun. "I love that he's making such a mockery of Republican politics and the super PACs," said one man in attendance. "But this is South Carolina, so I'm not 100 percent sure people know it's satire."
