The Colbert Report host Stephen Colbert has been having fun parodying the current race for the Republican presidential nomination. While most probably do not take him seriously, apparently his fans do, donating over $1 million to his Super Political Action Committee.
According to The Associated Press, PACs were required to file financial reports to the Federal Election Committee by Tuesday, but Colbert filed his Monday. The paperwork shows that his Americans For A Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow PAC has raised close to $1.02 million.
Colbert also sent a letter to the FEC, writing, “How you like me now, FEC?”
Colbert had briefly handed control of the PAC to The Daily Show host Jon Stewart, but took back control.
The New York Times reports that several celebrities and other noteworthy donors were listed in Colbert’s filing. For example, Hot in Cleveland’s Laura Sangiacomo and The West Wing’s Bradley Whitford both gave $250, while a Rolling Stones cover band called Sticky Fingers Band gave $400. The office of Gavin Newsom, the lieutenant governor of California, confirmed that he donated $500 to the PAC.
According to The Christian Science Monitor, compared to the Super PACs backing the major candidates, Colbert’s PAC was left in the dust. Restore Our Future, which supports Mitt Romney, has raised over $12 million, while Endorse Liberty, which backs Ron Paul, has already spent $3 million during this election cycle. American Crossroads, which is linked to Karl Rove, has raised close to $7 million.
