Palaeontologists have named a species of dinosaur after the demonic creature Eye of Sauron from Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings.
According to E! News, the species is called Sauroniops pachytholus. In Greek the name translates to "eye of Sauron" and the name was chosen due to the palaeontologists only finding a fossil that included one large eye socket.
"The idea of a predator that is physically known only as its fierce eye reminded me of Sauron, in particular as depicted in Peter Jackson's movies," study leader Andrea Cau was quoted by London's Daily Mail.
National Geographic reported that the dinosaur was a 40-foot predator that called North Africa its home about 95 million years ago and may be a match in size for the Tyrannosaurus Rex.
"The skull bone of Sauroniops is very broad and particularly thick: This suggests an animal as big as Tyrannosaurus [rex]," Cau was quoted by National Geographic but he said they can't be sure unless they find more fossils.
Fans of The Lord of the Rings can also look forward to the upcoming release of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey on December 14.
