Universal has announced Riddick, the third installment in the David Twohy sci-fi series starring Vin Diesel, is set to be released on September 6, 2013.

Riddick will also be released in IMAX and is the third installment in the series following 2000's Pitch Black and 2004's The Chronicles of Riddick, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Diesel, who plays the escaped-convict antihero Riddick, took to his Facebook page saying, "September 6th 2013, The release date of next year's RIDDICK. IMAX... very cool, great job DT. Grrrr...."

The film was shot with a more modest budget and Twohy returned to write and direct.

According to Hitfix, the official Riddick synopsis is as follows:

"Betrayed by his own kind and left for dead on a desolate planet, Riddick fights for survival against alien predators and becomes more powerful and dangerous than ever before. Soon bounty hunters from throughout the galaxy descend on Riddick only to find themselves pawns in his greater scheme for revenge. With his enemies right where he wants them, Riddick unleashes a vicious attack of vengeance before returning to his home planet of Furya to save it from destruction."

Aside from Diesel, Karl Urban, Katee Sackhoff and Jordi Molla will also star in the film.
