The Field of Dreams movie site located in Dyersville, Iowa has been sold and will be turned into a baseball complex.
According to CBS News, the investors group Go the Distance Baseball LLC closed last week on a deal they reached with owners Don and Becky Lansing. They paid $3.4 million plus interest, which is two million less than the original price of $5.4 million that the site was listed for more than two years ago.
Hall of Famer Wade Boggs is also part of the group that bought the site that will be turned into a $38-million, 24-field youth baseball and softball tournament complex, reports CBS Sports.
The deal for the property, which will receive tax breaks from the state, has been in the works for more than a year but not everyone was in support of the plans. Some local residents were unhappy but twice a district court judge denied petitions from opponents who did not support a zoning decision for the project.
The Field of Dreams movie site includes 193 acres of mostly cornfields, the two-bedroom house featured in the movie, the baseball field and six other buildings.
Construction is scheduled to begin this spring and the complex will face the ultimate test of "if you build it, they will come" in 2014 when it is planned to open.
