After receiving criticism about the new electronic voting system, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences extended the Academy Awards voting deadline for members to January 4, 2013.

"By extending the voting deadline we are providing every opportunity available to make the transition to online balloting as smooth as possible. We're grateful to our global membership for joining us in this process," said the academy's chief operating officer Ric Robertson in a statement quoted by Yahoo! News.

According to The Huffington Post, the academy partnered with the electronic voting firm Everyone Counts Inc. to develop the first Oscars online voting system earlier this year.

The new system allows members to vote online or through the mail instead of strictly through paper ballots. There are also assisted voting stations in Los Angeles, New York and London, and a 24-hour support line.

Nominations for the Academy Awards are set to be announced on January 10, 2013 and the 85th annual Academy Awards will air live on February 24, 2013 on ABC.
