Matt Olmstead, executive producer of Chicago Fire and its spinoff Chicago PD signed a two-year deal with Universal Television that allows him to continue as showrunner for Chicago Fire, and also serve as showrunner for Chicago PD. NBC picked up Chicago PD on May 10 and it has a midseason order.

According to Deadline, Universal Television EVP Bela Bajaria says, “Matt is an experienced and creative showrunner and we were thrilled with his stellar work on Chicago Fire. We look forward to extending our relationship with him on Chicago PD and at Universal TV.”

Formerly the Prison Break showrunner, Olmstead joined Chicago Fire after the pilot. He previously spent three years on ABC’s NYPD, and served as executive producer and co-creator for Breakout Kings. Having extensive experience working on cop dramas, Olmstead’s contributions allowed for Chicago Fire’s ratings to grow exponentially, which eventually led to an early renewal along with the spinoff.

In a recent interview by the Chicago Tribune with Chicago Fire creator Derek Haas, Haas says of Olmstead and Dick Wolf (executive producer), “It’s been the greatest creative partnership that we’ve had as guys who have written a lot of movies.”
